Treating Nail Fungus with Nail PolishOne of the most common skin infections people get are fungal infections. This is because the body is host to thousands, if not millions, of fungi, bacterium and other microorganisms. They are generally not a problem in healthy persons. However, under the right conditions, these organisms can cause disease. Toenail and fingernail fungus is one that develops often.Nail fungus is difficult to get rid of because it lives on the nail bed which is protected by the nail. A new type of treatment for the stubborn infection has come available in the form of finger and toe nail polish. Does this medicated nail polish for toenail fungus really work?

Nail Fungus Lacquer

Nail Polish for Nail Fungus
Nail polish fungal treatments are specially-designed lacquers that contain fungus-killing medication. Currently, there are only two types approved for the treatment and prevention of fungal infections in the nail: Ciclopirox (Penlac 8%) and Amorolfine (5%).

  • Ciclopirox nail lacquers: This medication targets the fungal cells’ metabolic processes, preventing it from taking up nutrients which effectively kills it.
  • Amorolfine nail lacquers: This fungicide attacks the fungus’ cell membranes, breaking them which lead to cell death.

The lacquers are typically colorless and applied in the same manner as regular nail polish. The only difference is that a coat of the lacquer should be applied every day for six days. On the seventh day, you would need to remove the polish using regular acetone remover, thoroughly wash and dry the nail, and then apply a fresh coat of the lacquer.

According to the National Institute of Health, it takes about 6 to 12 months for fingernails to grow and about 12 to 18 months for toenails. This process would need to be repeated week after week until the infection is cleared completely. However, some people that used these products stated they were able to see improvement in their condition after about 3 months of consistent use.

How Effective is Nail Fungus Polish

The lacquer isn’t as successful at treating nail fungus as other over-the-counter topical treatments on the market. The major reason is access. The fungus lives on the nail bed underneath the nail which can make it difficult to deliver the medication to the infection. Supposedly, the lacquer acts as a type of seal that keeps the medication on the toe so that it has time to penetrate the surface of the nail, but this doesn’t work for everyone.

Another concern is can nail polish cause toenail fungus? In and of itself, nail polish cannot cause a person to get a fungal infection. However, it can contribute to the cause of the infection by trapping moisture under the nail. The fungus that causes these nail infections thrives in warm moist areas. If nails aren’t thoroughly dried before polish is put on them, it can provide the perfect place for fungus to invade and grow.

There are numerous toenail fungus home remedies more effective than nail polish. These remedies are made from natural ingredients and work on two fronts. Not only do they penetrate the nail to attack the fungus from the outside but many of them are paired with dietary supplements that get at the infection from inside the body.
